_ The seasons do not seem to affect our lives as much as they did in ancient times but we like to see the changes that are brought by Mother Nature throughout the different times of the year. For instance, my favourite time of the year is autumn because even though I know that winter is just around the corner, with its bone-chilling temperatures and icy winds, I love to savour the hint of chill in the air and the glorious colours around. I love the crisp mornings with the occasional frost covering the ground first thing in the morning, the evenings which often bring the smell of wood fires as the gardeners finish the last of the work before the cold sets in, and best of all, the riot of colours on all the trees and bushes as the leaves change colour.

The gradual shading of the leaves from green to eventual brown, is accompanied by the whole gamut of colours ranging from plain red, russet, orange, yellow, purple and scarlet. Even the browns range from the boring to mahogany and chocolate. It is at this time of the year that my thoughts turn to warm fireplaces and the cosiness of my bed. In the summer I have to use blackout curtains on my bedroom windows because otherwise, the sunlight streams straight in and onto my bed at the most inconvenient times and forces me to have to wake up at stupid o’clock. In the winter, I find that same sunshine comforting and open my curtains at night so as to catch the morning sun.

I love to lie awake on my cheap memory foam mattress and pull my Hungarian goose down duvet up to my chin while I try to convince myself that I really do need to get up. I have always believed in having nice bedding and often hunt out a bed linen sale even out of season. I enjoy resting my head on Hungarian goose down pillows and my previous favourite was a Siberian goose down duvet.

The longer nights at this time of the year mean that I have the excuse of creeping into my bed a lot earlier than in the summer and snuggle up with a good book or even work brought home from the office. I have a pair of cute furry animal slippers which were a birthday present from a good friend and I practically live in them all through the winter and change into them as soon as I walk into the door. These slippers, along with a few woolly socks and a couple of fleecy pyjamas basically make up the bulk of my winter wardrobe when I am at home. at the office, I need to make more of an effort but even then, I find myself looking forward to getting home and snuggling into my Hungarian goose down duvet. Add this to a cup of hot chocolate and it feels wonderful and comforting.

_ At this moment I am surrounded by family and friends, all having a good time and enjoying themselves, and yet I can only think about one thing; getting into my own bed, sinking into my cheap memory foam mattress and snuggling into my Hungarian goose down duvet. I had also managed to find four Hungarian goose down pillows at the recent bed linen sale I had been to and had given my old Siberian goose down duvet to charity.

It is not that I am anti-social by nature but I have to be honest and say that as much as I love my extended family, I can only manage short doses of most people before I become irritable and long for my own company. I am a homebody at heart and having to make social visits and being made to attend frequent large events tests my very short temper to the very limits. This is not a new thing with me because even when I was younger, I remember being told to put a smile on my face whenever we had to go out and I used to try my best. After a while my parents found it easier to not take me than to have to deal with my attitude.

To this day whenever I am in a large group, I feel lonely. I don’t know why but even though I laugh and joke along with everyone, I feel sad inside and am hard put to explain this because thankfully I have no major problems or stresses. At a party you will find me by looking in the quietest room, where I will be lurking, whenever I can escape from the main festivities.

At home, I love my bed more than any other piece of furniture. It is a large simple design and made of distressed pine which has been polished to a dull finish. I have it piled up with my Hungarian goose down pillows and various smaller cushions all covered in bright simple covers, devoid of fancy frills and bows. The Siberian goose down duvet and cheap memory foam mattress are likewise covered in a soft fabric which ties in the colours of the room and soft furnishings. I like to buy new covers quite often and am a regular at the local home furnishing store and I get sent a notice whenever they are having a bed linen sale.

There are few things in life that I find more comforting than going to bed in the middle of a cold, drizzly afternoon, with a hot water bottle at my feet, and cuddling my daughter, as we both settle down for a nap. A close second comes the popular treat of curling up on a cushy sofa in front of the genuine log fire in the fireplace and reading a favourite book, whilst drinking a cup of hot chocolate made with milk and plenty of marshmallows.

I wish I was there now rather than being stuck here!

_ When I was expecting my first child, there was so much to learn about and read up on and I spent a lot of money on books about pregnancy and baby magazines. The most comfortable place to read was obviously my bed and in order to make the most of this free time, I went to a departmental store in the city centre which was advertising a bed linen sale for a limited time period. Since I was starting to have back problems, I wanted to try one of the new cheap memory foam mattresses which had just come onto the market at that time.

Whilst there, I also bought a Siberian goose down duvetand some Siberian goose down pillows which the shop assistant assured me would ensure that I had a restful night and would wake up refreshed. The fact that she then laughed, as she also added that I should enjoy it while I can because after the baby arrived I would have precious little time to spend enjoying my purchases, was an indication of things to come. Every person I met during those months said similar things about the way that a baby would disturb my sleep and that it would be years before I would again enjoy an uninterrupted night’s sleep, but this made me determined to try and find a way round the problem.

Research showed that if a baby is introduced to a regular bedtime routine very early on, the chances increase that it will be a good sleeper and settle down easier if it does awake at night. With this in mind I read up on a lot of material while I had the time, so that when the time came, I was as prepared as you can be for such a life-changing event. Even though you know the theory, the practicalities can still be challenging but I was lucky the first time around, since my eldest daughter was a calm, relaxed baby who didn’t cry unnecessarily and used to sleep for eighteen to twenty hours a day, waking for feeding and changing only.

From about six months she would sleep through the night for seven to eight hours which meant that I had an easy time establishing a routine. Early in the evening she would have a warm bath and then after sharing some quiet play time to help her wind down, we used to have story time and then she would have her last bottle and fall asleep. This soon became the normal way of life and we had gotten used to having peaceful evenings until two years later when went through the whole routine again with our second child, although this one was a lot more hard work as she didn’t sleep as much during the day and cried more. Even so we stuck to our guns and got her into a routine early on so that at least she did sleep through the night.
